Flying with Your Dog or Cat: A Guide from London to Dubai
Traveling with your furry friend can be an exciting adventure, especially when heading from London to Dubai. Whether you’re relocating or simply taking a vacation, having your pet by your side can make the experience even more enjoyable. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your journey is smooth and stress-free for both you and your pet.
1. Pre-Travel Preparations
Check Airline Policies
There are different options you can look at when flying with your pet. Different airlines have different policies on travelling with your pets whether it is in the cabin or in the cargo hold.
Before booking your flight, it is worth researching airlines that allow pets in the cabin. This gives your peace of mind and makes a far less stressful journey. The other option is your pet travelling in the cargo hold of the airplane.
In Cabin
We recommend wherever possible to travel with your pet in the cabin. It is far less stressful for your dog or cat and gives you peace of mind that they are ok and with you at all times. It is sometimes the only option for snub-nosed/short nosed dog breeds (or the technical term: brachycephalic breeds) as these breeds are statistically more prone to death during air travel. Airlines put bans on travelling with these breeds during the warmer months usually only allowing travel between November and April.
Etihad is the only commercial airline offering in cabin transport of your pets at the moment between London and Abu Dhabi - and only the London/Manchester to Dubai leg. Your pet must stay in their carrier at all times and carriers must not exceed 40 x 40 x 22cm (L x W x H) to fit under the seat in front of you, or 50 x 43 x 50cm (L x W x H) if you have purchased an adjacent seat. It costs an additional $1,500 on top of your airfare in economy and if you are flying business, you must book an additional seat as well as the additional $1,500. Sky Nine offer a way to travel with your dog on a lead with no use of a carrier. They can sit on your lap or by your side and will be with you at all times. It is a shared private charter where you will travel with up to 9 other passengers and their pets on a pet-dedicated private jet. If you are flying with a cat, they must stay in their carrier but can be on your knee or next to you the whole way. With the use of private terminals, you avoid all queues arriving only an hour before take off and once landing, could be in your car ride home within 15 minutes. It is the best way to travel with your pets.
Cargo Hold
Each airline has its own regulations regarding pet travel, including size restrictions, carrier dimensions, and fees. Popular airlines for this route are Emirates and British Airways. Pets can travel as checked baggage or as cargo in the hold depending on each scenario. The cost depends on the size of the crate/weight and can vary from $500 upwards. Your pet will need to be dropped off at the airport in the crate at least 3 hours before the flight. Once landing, it is usually at least 3 hours before you can pick them up as they clear customs and paperwork is checked. For more information, check our their websites:

Veterinary Check-Up
Schedule a visit to your veterinarian to ensure your pet is healthy and fit for travel. Obtain a UK health certificate and ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations, especially rabies. This documentation will be required by the airline and for entry into the UAE. Take a look at our guide to what vaccinations are required:

We highly recommend you use the services of a Pet Relocation Company for the import/export paperwork. They ensure your pet has everything they need to leave and arrive and ensure seamless travels with no hiccups on the day. Take a look at Relocate Your Pet or Pawsome Pets - both give amazing service!
Travel Carrier
If a carrier is required, choose a comfortable, airline-approved carrier that allows your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down. Each airline specifies exact sizing depending on the size of your pet and it is extremely important that you adhere to this to prevent any hiccups on the day! Familiarize your pet with the carrier before the trip by allowing them to explore and spend time in it. This will help reduce anxiety on travel day and make sure they are as comfortable as they can be!
2. Packing Essentials
Food and Water
Pack enough food for the journey, along with portable water bowls. Some airlines allow you to bring a small amount of food in your carry-on for your pet if they are travelling with you. You can attach a water bowl to your pet’s crate - we would recommend attaching two in case one comes loose or spills! A hamster water bottle can also do the trick if your dog or cat gets the hang of drinking from it! We advise not to feed your pets 4-6 hours before travelling to minimise the risk of them needing to use the bathroom during the travels.
Comfort Items
Bring along your pet’s favorite blanket or toy. Familiar scents can help soothe them during the flight. You can also line the crate with puppy pads in case a bathroom accident happens!
Travel Documents
Keep all necessary documents, including health certificates, vaccination records, and your pet’s ID, easily accessible. These should be attached to the crate if your pet is travelling in the hold.
3. At the Airport
Arrive Early
Get to the airport with plenty of time to spare. This allows for check-in, security procedures, and some extra time for your pet to acclimatize to the bustling environment. If you are travelling with Sky Nine, no need to come earlier than an hour before as check in and security checks are super quick.
Security Procedures
Be prepared for security checks. You may need to take your pet out of the carrier while the carrier goes through the scanner. Keeping your pet on a lead during this process is essential for safety. Your pet also may need to wear a muzzle for any security checks so don’t be alarmed!
4. Arrival in Dubai/London
Customs Regulations
Be aware of UAE/UK regulations regarding pet entry. Your pet relocator will be able to help with this or feel free to get in touch with us! Upon arrival, you will need to present your pet’s health certificate and vaccination records - these should have already been pre-approved. Ensure you have all necessary documentation handy to avoid any issues or delays.
Settling In
Once you’ve cleared customs, give your pet some time to adjust to the new environment. Set up a comfortable space in your home with their familiar items to help them feel at home. Give them an item of your clothing for the familiar smell whilst they adjust. Try and keep their routine as normal too.
Conclusion
Traveling from London to Dubai with your dog or cat can be a wonderful experience if you’re well-prepared. By following these steps and ensuring your pet’s comfort and safety, you can make the journey enjoyable for both of you. Happy travels!
